Justification of Response

When our team was first given the Driving Question (Providing social good, who profits?), we thought that the topic on social good was very vague. Before we started on coming up with the response to the Driving Question, we thought that it will good to use the Analysis Process to analysis the Driving Question. Through it, we find that we would like to associate doing social good with the start-up of Social Enterprises. Social Enterprises are businesses that are set up to maximise improvements in the human and environmental well-being, rather than maximising profits for external shareholders. Our team has defined social good as something that is shared and beneficial for all (or most) members of a given community. After much discussion, our team has come to a conclusion that the government, the beneficiaries, the company and the society are the ones who will be profited from social good being done. We will be researching on artefacts that will support our response with sufficient reasoning. We will have one artefact each to support the various groups of people who will benefit, and one artefact in general.

Justification for the Government
Based on the article we have extracted, we can see that initially the Government of Japan and Korea were reluctant t to expand social expenditures because they had stable economic at that point of time, which was around the mid 1990s. However, when economic crises struck around late 1990s, they decided to venture on social expenditures because more people are facing financial difficulties. Due to that, it has helped to tackle the problems faced by the people during the economic crisis.

Justification for the Beneficiaries
To support that social good profits the beneficiaries, we have used Eighteen Chefs as an example. This restaurant hires the youths at risks and ex-convicts to work here.

"Here you can draw on the walls, order up to a thousand different combinations of baked dishes. But most of all, this is a place for change. Here, ex-convicts and drug addicts get a second chance in life."
This quote shows that the beneficiaries like drug addicts and ex-convicts can benefit from the good that is being done by getting a second chance and also get to change themselves and start a new life.

Gary, from Boys Town, a juvenile place for delinquents quoted that:

"Before that, I have a bad attitude. But slowly, he (Benny) taught me how to be a better man"
This also shows that the beneficiaries are being helped and taught to become a better person so that they can get accepted into the society. And because of that, Gary is a full-time chef in Eighteen Chefs.

With this action, this group of people are given a chance to re-integrate back into the society, and is not seen as a useless group of people.

Justification for Companies (Social Enterprises)
To support that social good profits the company, we have the awards that the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) has won with the help of the work of the beneficiaries. They have been awarded the ISO 9001;2008 certificate and has also received the 4 year EduTrust award for having achieved satisfactory to commendable performance in key areas of management and the provision of educational services. This example has showed that, the company will gain profit and even recognition through its work of providing social good.

Also, there is a President's Challenge Social Enterprise Award to recognize the "outstanding social enterprises which are innovative and have made significant sustained contributions to the disadvantaged in our community."

This shows that by doing good and helping out the society, the companies can also gain benefit and awards for all their hard work in shaping a better society.

Justification for Society
We have made a cross-reference based on the two articles that we found (set 4 change Wordpress and Conversations for a Better world), and it shows that the society is benefiting in terms of Education, Sanitation, Health and Poverty.

We have found a video on a Social Enterprise, World Toilet Organization, that helps with the Sanitation of the people living in poor countries. Based on the video, we found out that the cause of 1.5 million deaths of children under the age of 5 every year is because of contaminated water and bad sanitation. Therefore, the clean and proper toilet that they (society/people) get will help them overcome their problems.

This is how we arrive in the conclusion that with doing social good, it has brought benefit to the government, the beneficiaries, the company and the society.
